SINGLE REVIEW // ‘Mr Prism’ – Psychedelic Porn Crumpets

WORDS BY THOMAS FREEMAN

Mr. Prismis the latest track from Western Australian psych-rock band Psychedelic Porn Crumpets (PPC). This is their first release of 2020 and second single since dropping their album “And Now for the Whatchamacallit”, an album many people were big fans of, which really started the band down a slightly different sounding path and really showed what they were capable of doing; Mr. Prism really shows the band continuing along this route.

Mr. Prism is really everything that you would want from a new PPC track, filled to the brim with a variety of well-produced and colourful sounds all throughout. The effects-driven guitars feel like they’re straight off “ANFTW” with their catchy riffs and melodies; the bass riff helps hold the track together especially in the verses; the synths push it into something pretty unique; and the drums blend together a distinct fuzziness and shimmer, making for one of the song’s best aspects.

The song is surprisingly relatable with frontman Jack McEwan writing about his recent pneumonia diagnosis, and how he’s decided to simply not turn one down no matter how sick he would be, closing the track with the line “nobody fears the nose beers”. McEwan serves some much needed optimism into a year filled with lockdowns, viruses and a distinct lack of live music.

It’s also just such a fun song to play aloud, and it definitely feels like the band had a blast writing, performing and producing the track. Rhythmically it’s very catchy and the tune is definitely one that’ll get stuck with you for a while. Whether you’re a big fan of PPC or only just getting into psychedelic rock, this is definitely a track worth checking out.
